North Dakota Project > Introductory Landscapes and Portraits

The universe created photography. Photography introduced me to Nina, and Nina brought me to North Dakota. When I first arrived, I attempted to see what I imagined she saw. However, I quickly realized how naïve that was, because experience colors everything, especially what we see. The world appears similar but not the same.

As a means of introducing myself to the landscape, I began constructing triptychs - in the same style that Nina used to join some of her photographs. When I began connecting with community members, I initiated a comprehensive conversation about the significance of family photographs. And so, the genre of family photography, and more specifically, why we have a need to construct a photographic record of our lives, emerged to be the greater project theme.
